A torn Achilles tendon is an injury to the strong tendon at the back of your ankle that connects your calf muscles to your heel. A tear often happens suddenly, usually during sports or physical activity, when your foot is planted and your calf contracts forcefully.
It may be easy to notice and can cause:
- Sudden pain in the back of your ankle or calf
- A popping or snapping sensation
- Swelling or bruising near the heel
- Difficulty walking or pushing off your foot
How serious is it?
A torn Achilles tendon is a serious injury, and a prompt evaluation is important to determine the extent of the injury.
- Partial tears may still allow some movement but can be painful and limit strength.
- Complete tears often make it difficult or impossible to walk normally.
What does recovery look like?
Recovery depends on whether the tendon is partially or completely torn.
- Imaging, such as an MRI or ultrasound, may be used to confirm the diagnosis.
- Treatment may include immobilization in a boot or cast, or surgery in some cases.
- Recovery often takes several months and usually includes physical therapy to restore strength, flexibility and function.
