Shoulder (AC Joint) Separation

Sports Injuries

<img alt=">

An AC joint injury, sometimes called a shoulder separation, affects the joint at the top of your shoulder where the collarbone meets the shoulder blade. This type of injury usually happens after a fall, direct blow or collision to the shoulder and is common in contact sports.

Common signs include:

  • Pain at the top of your shoulder
  • Swelling or bruising
  • A visible bump near the shoulder
  • Pain when raising your arm or moving it across your chest

How serious is it?

AC joint injuries can range from mild to more severe.

  • Mild injuries may cause pain but often improve with rest and time.
  • More severe injuries can affect shoulder strength and make movement uncomfortable.

What does recovery look like?

How long recovery takes depends on how significant the injury is.

  • X-rays may be used to get a clearer picture of the injury.
  • Treatment often includes rest, ice and wearing a sling to support the shoulder. Physical therapy may help restore strength and movement as pain improves.
  • Most people recover without surgery, although more severe injuries may require further treatment.
