Groin Strain (Pull)

Sports Injuries

<img alt=">

A groin strain, sometimes called a groin pull, is a muscle injury in the upper inner thigh. It usually happens when you make a sudden movement, such as running, jumping or changing direction quickly. Groin strains are common in sports and other activities that involve quick starts and stops.

It may be easy to notice and can cause:

  • Pain or tightness in the groin or inner thigh
  • Pain when lifting your knee or bringing your legs together
  • Swelling or bruising
  • Discomfort that worsens with movement

How serious is it?

Groin strains can range from mild to severe.

  • Mild strains may cause soreness but still allow you move with little discomfort.
  • More severe strains involve torn muscle fibers and can make walking, running or jumping painful.
  • Severe strains may limit normal movement and cause sharp pain or swelling.

What does recovery look like?

Most groin strains heal with rest and proper care, but recovery depends on the severity of the injury.

  • Imaging, such as an MRI, may be used if symptoms are severe or not improving.
  • Treatment often includes rest, ice and gradual return to activity.
  • Recovery may take a few weeks, while more severe strains can take longer and may benefit from physical therapy.
