Joint Replacement Pre-Op Class

Patients who plan to undergo Joint Replacement Surgery are expected by their orthopaedic surgeons to attend the Joint Replacement Pre-Op Class.

This newly designed interactive educational program is coordinated and taught by Connecticut Orthopaedic Institute’s Nursing Navigators Peter Cegelka, RN BSN ONC and Christina DiMaggio, RN. These classes are available at multiple locations each week with class times in the morning and evening.

Please contact Connecticut Orthopaedic Institute at 860.384.8614 or 203.464.7819 to schedule a class no less than two weeks prior to your surgery. This program will help you to better understand what to expect with your joint replacement.

Representatives from the following areas will be available to offer information and answer questions specific to your individual needs:

  • Nursing Navigators
  • Physical Therapy
  • Discharge Planning

The discharge planning process helps patients to determine the optimal course of rehabilitation post operatively. Ideally the plan should be to return home after your joint replacement. A pre op assessment will be done to help us prepare you for discharge. In the occasional event that a short term rehab necessary, the case manager on the unit will set you up with a rehab facility in close proximity to your home and family. Joint replacement patients who participate in pre-operative education classes will become better prepared for their upcoming surgery.

Joint Replacement Online Pre-Op Class

In the event you are unable to attend the class, Connecticut Orthopaedic Institute also offers an online version of its Joint Replacement Pre-Op Class. The online class is a convenient option for those patients who are unable to attend an in-person session. It outlines the things you need to do before, during, and after surgery. Planning tools, advice on medications, diet recommendations and exercise recommendations are also included. We encourage you to view the online class in its entirety. After completing the online pre-op class, you will be asked to confirm your completion and send us your feedback.
