Fractured Fibula

Sports Injuries

<img alt=">

A fractured fibula is a break in the fibula, one of the two bones in your lower leg. This injury often happens during sports, falls or twisting injuries to the ankle and can sometimes occur along with a severe ankle sprain.

It may be easy to notice and can cause:

  • Pain along the outside of your lower leg or ankle
  • Swelling or bruising
  • Tenderness to the touch
  • Difficulty walking or putting weight on your leg

How serious is it?

The severity of a fractured fibula depends on where the bone breaks and whether the ankle joint is involved.

  • Less severe fractures may remain stable and allow limited movement.
  • More severe fractures can affect ankle alignment and make walking difficult.

What does recovery look like?

Most fibula fractures heal with proper treatment, but recovery depends on the type and location of the fracture.

  • Imaging, such as X-rays, is used to confirm the fracture and guide care.
  • Treatment may include a brace, boot or cast. More involved treatment, including surgery, may be necessary if the ankle is unstable.
  • Recovery often takes several weeks, and physical therapy may help restore strength, balance and movement.
